Zander genealogy

The family information of Johann Andreas Zander (follow links to Family 1) and his descendants presented on this site is the result of  ongoing research that I began in the early 1990’s and has progressed slowly since then. The driving force behind my research was my father’s desire to know or find out more about his mother, who she was, who was her family.

Regarding family members — the death certificate of Johann Andreas records that at the time of his death (15th September 1920) that the number of issue living was 3 Male and 3 Female and the number of issue deceased as 4 Male and 4 Female making a total of 14 children or descendants, you will notice these records only record a total of 9 comprising 5 Male and 4 Female. Doris Garrett recalled her Grandmother Maria talking of twin girls being left in Germany, this still leaves 3 souls unaccounted for, maybe this site may help to solve the mystery.

Some significant help has been received thus far from a range of people associated directly or indirectly with Zander descendants.

I do have some old family images, that have survived the ravages of time living in a cardboard box in Herb and Hilda Lipschinski’s garages. these images will become part of this site, as will some of the stories that I have gathered, but I thought it was important to get the data up first.

Information for the New Zealand descendants was researched by Brian Smith and Marie Knight.  A booklet called the Zander Families was published some time ago including photos and favourite recipes, I particularly liked Neil Timmo’s favourite food, being icecream, icecream and more icecream.

Much of the information for the Andreas FRIEDRICH Zander family was provided by Una Mattschos of Waikerie, who was a wealth of information in regard to this family, details for the above mentioned family appears in the Fiegert families book “Hopes Fulfilled”.

Evonne Roocke’s Pfitzner book “A Brief History of J.C.Pfitzner and Descendants 1877– 1987” printed in November 1987 was also a source and inspiration to research the Zander family. It’s interesting to note that the committee formed to produce this book all have links to the Zander family.

Information has also been sourced by ploughing through the Lutheran archives in North Adelaide, the Mortlock Library in Adelaide and information from a long list of family members. The copy of the coat of arms (top left corner) appears thanks to Roy Zander.

Information for Johann Albert August Zander’s family (a brother of Johann Andreas Zander) has also been researched by myself but was consolidated when I was put in contact with Judith Tolman by local Eudunda identity Eric Freund a descendant of this family. I am aware that Leon Zander is updating details for this family.   Fay Herrmann who is also a descendant in this family(Zerner then Schultz) has provided me with an update for  her immediate family and has access to details for the Menz family as well, this has been updated.  Details for this family can be found by following the link to Family 2.

The whole process of recording data has been greatly assisted using ERIC and Wally SPEHR’s genealogical software “Top of the Tree” thanks Eric and Wally, a real lifesaver and timesaver when it comes to preparing and presenting the biographic data sheets and descendant charts that appear on this site and will become available in PDF format from this site.  The Henry Code has been used to identify people in this family with the number one(1) being assigned to Johann Andreas Zander and number two (2) assigned to his brother Johann Albert August.

Please feel free to email me any anecdotes or information that you feel would make the pdf’s a more comprehensive family history.  Also do not hesitate in contacting me if any information is incorrect.
